First game with a new partner: five practical tips

2 min read

Playing with someone new for the first time is a little uncertain: you do not know how they play, or how seriously they take it. A few things are worth settling in advance, and the game will go smoothly.

1. Be honest about your level

The most common problem is a big gap in level. Say how long you have played and what you can do, for example sustain a rally or serve reliably. The reference scale on the Find your level page helps.

2. Agree on an exact time and length

Name a specific day, time and duration, for example one hour. A short, relaxed first game beats a long one nobody feels like playing.

3. Decide who books the court

Court time is paid separately, directly to the venue. Agree in advance who books the court and how you will split the cost. Public court booking through YTC is not available yet.

4. Arrive on time and warm up first

  • Arrive a few minutes early.
  • Rally together briefly before you start counting points.
  • Agree whether you are playing points or just rallying.

5. Say whether you want to play again

A few words are enough. If the game worked, fix the next date right away. If not, the club community has plenty of other players to meet.
